ASVÖ Schachverein Urfahr

♟️ Club Identity

ASVÖ Schachverein Urfahr is a chess club in Linz-Urfahr, Upper Austria. The club continues a long chess tradition that began as a chess section of Sportvereinigung Urfahr in 1947. Later, the independent Schachverein Urfahr was founded in 1996, giving the local chess community its own dedicated structure. Today, the club serves players who want regular chess evenings, team competition, tournament chess, and a friendly meeting place in the northern part of Linz. Its club evenings take place at Sportbuffet Seidlgartl on Merianweg 53, where members and guests can play, analyze, and prepare for competition. In addition, the club belongs to the Upper Austrian chess scene and keeps a visible role through regional events, league participation, and its annual Linz tournament activity.

🏆 Tournament Activity

ASVÖ Schachverein Urfahr organizes the Linzer Stadtmeisterschaft, a classical chess event connected with the Linz city championship title. The 2026 edition is the 32nd Linzer Stadtmeisterschaft and takes place at Volkshaus Harbach in Linz-Urfahr. It uses a 7-round Swiss system, follows FIDE rules, and counts for Austrian national Elo. The event also awards the title of Linz City Champion in classical chess to the best eligible player with residence or playing eligibility in Linz. Moreover, the club has supported this tournament tradition for many years, with the city championship returning in 1995 through the work of key Urfahr chess figures. Beyond the open tournament, the club competes in Upper Austrian team chess and offers local players a practical route from weekly club play to structured league competition.

🌱 Youth Chess and Community Activity

ASVÖ Schachverein Urfahr supports youth chess and community chess through training activity, beginner-friendly work, and local events. The club has organized children’s and youth training in Linz, including regular Monday sessions for young players in past seasons. Its youth work has also included Schülerliga activity in the northern district, giving children and schools a clear entry point into tournament chess. In addition, the club presents itself as a meeting place for young and “young-at-heart” chess friends, which fits its role as a social and competitive chess home. New players can start with casual games, while ambitious members can move toward rated tournaments and team matches. As a result, ASVÖ Schachverein Urfahr gives Linz players a stable chess environment that combines tradition, community, and serious over-the-board competition.
