♟️ Club Identity
Memphis Chess Club is a historic chess club in downtown Memphis, Tennessee, United States. Founded in 1877, the club ranks among the oldest chess clubs in the country and now operates from 195 Madison Avenue, Suite 101. Its current venue combines organized chess activity with a full-service café, which makes the club a practical meeting place for players, families, visitors, and local chess fans. The club sits in the historic Toof Building near AutoZone Park and other downtown Memphis landmarks. As a result, it gives tournament players a central location for rated chess, casual games, study sessions, food, and social chess in the same space. Memphis Chess Club also maintains an active public presence through its website, tournament store, live boards, YouTube broadcasts, and social media updates.
🏆 Tournament Activity
Memphis Chess Club plays a major role in the 2026 Peter P. Lahde Tennessee Open & State Championship together with the Tennessee Chess Association and Promarketing Group. The 2026 championship takes place in downtown Memphis, with the Holiday Inn Memphis-Downtown as the main playing site and selected rounds at Memphis Chess Club. The event includes a 6-round Swiss format, Open and Amateur sections, Tennessee state championship titles, class prizes, Grand Prix status, and a $10,001 guaranteed prize fund. Beyond this state championship weekend, the club organizes and hosts regular rated chess in Memphis. Its tournament activity includes the Mid-South Open, Memphis Open events, National Chess Day tournaments, monthly rated events, quick and classical tournaments, and club league games. Therefore, players can use the club for both local competition and larger regional tournament weekends.
🌱 Scholastic and Community Chess
Memphis Chess Club supports scholastic chess and community chess through student tournaments, public events, beginner-friendly activities, and regular playing opportunities. The club welcomes all ages, which makes it accessible for juniors, families, adults, and visiting tournament players. Its schedule has included scholastic tournaments, quick events, rated club nights, and community chess programs connected with Memphis public spaces. In addition, the club streams games from tournament top boards through its YouTube channel, which helps players follow local chess and review live games after events. The club’s broader chess environment also supports learning through over-the-board play, analysis, and a visible chess culture in downtown Memphis. This mix of history, tournament work, and community access makes Memphis Chess Club a strong organizer for players across West Tennessee and the Mid-South region.
