♟️ About Kragerø Sjakklubb

Kragerø Sjakklubb is a historic chess club based in Kragerø, Telemark, Norway. The present club was formally founded on September 13, 1919, although documented chess activity in Kragerø reaches back to at least 1906. The club operates from premises at Jens Lauersens bakke 2 in central Kragerø and provides regular tournament play, chess instruction, beginner activities, and social chess for players of different ages and experience levels. The club works closely with Kragerø Sjakklubb Ungdom, its youth organization, which was founded in 1978 and has operated continuously since then. Together, the adult and youth sections provide training for children, developing players, and adults while also organizing club tournaments and larger open competitions. Kragerø has developed a strong tournament tradition through the annual Kragerø Grand Prix and the international Kragerø Resort Chess series, which previously attracted titled players and produced FIDE title norms. Truls R. Jørgensen is the current Chairman and principal public contact for Kragerø Sjakklubb. He has been closely associated with the organization for many years and remains responsible for its major tournament activity. The club’s principal current event is the Kragerø Grand Prix 2026 – VT Tour, scheduled for September 4–6, 2026 at Kragerø Sportell.

📜 More Than a Century of Chess

Chess was played in Kragerø before the creation of the present club. The club’s historical account notes a 1906 correspondence match against Arendal, which Kragerø won 2–0. Like many early Norwegian chess organizations, the first local club disappeared before World War I. The modern Kragerø Sjakklubb was then founded in 1919 by N. Rønning, editor of Kragerø Blad. Youth chess later became a permanent part of the organization. Helge Elias Theting founded Kragerø Sjakklubb Ungdom in 1978, and the youth section has remained active ever since. This combination of long-established adult chess and continuous junior activity gives Kragerø one of the more substantial local chess traditions in southern Norway.

🎓 Youth Chess and Community Activity

Kragerø Sjakklubb aims to provide an inclusive chess environment for both children and adults. Its current program includes club tournaments, beginner instruction, and training for children who already have some playing experience. The club also expanded its adult educational activity in 2026 with courses aimed at pensioners and other adult beginners. Therefore, its training program is not restricted to traditional junior chess. Kragerø Sjakklubb Ungdom has also organized larger youth competitions. During Kragerø’s 350th-anniversary celebrations in 2016, the youth club hosted the Norwegian Team Championship for Children and Juniors, which brought 164 players to Kragerø Resort. Regular instruction and club competition provide a pathway from learning the game to participation in regional and nationally rated tournaments.

🏆 Kragerø Grand Prix

The Kragerø Grand Prix is the club’s principal recurring tournament. It is traditionally held during the first weekend of September and has developed into a well-established event on the Norwegian tournament calendar. The 21st edition in 2024 attracted 111 players, demonstrating the scale the tournament has reached. The 2025 edition again drew more than 100 competitors and became part of the new Vestfold og Telemark GP Tour, alongside tournaments in Porsgrunn, Sandefjord, and Tønsberg. The Kragerø Grand Prix 2026 – VT Tour is scheduled for September 4–6, 2026 at Kragerø Sportell. Kragerø Sjakklubb is the organizer, with Truls R. Jørgensen handling tournament communication. The event combines rapid games on Friday with longer classical games during the weekend and forms part of the wider Norwegian Grand Prix tournament structure.

🌍 Kragerø Resort Chess

Kragerø Sjakklubb also developed the international Kragerø Resort Chess tournament series. Editions were staged between 2017 and 2023, with separate groups for stronger international players and lower-rated competitors. The tournament attracted Grandmasters, International Masters, women’s titled players, and ambitious juniors. Several editions produced GM and IM norms, giving the event a significant role in Norwegian international tournament chess. Kragerø Resort itself also has a notable connection with modern elite chess. Magnus Carlsen and his team used the resort during preparation for several World Championship matches, and club members were given opportunities to meet Carlsen and members of his team.

🏛️ Organization and Leadership

Truls R. Jørgensen serves as Chairman of Kragerø Sjakklubb and is the club’s primary organizational and tournament contact. He has represented the club in Norwegian chess administration for many years and has played a central role in projects such as the Kragerø Grand Prix and Kragerø Resort Chess. The club maintains its own premises in central Kragerø, providing a stable base for teaching, club tournaments, youth activities, and community chess.
