Dolnośląski Związek Szachowy (DZSzach), internationally known as the Lower Silesian Chess Federation, is the regional governing body for organized chess in Lower Silesia, Poland. Based in Wrocław, it brings together chess clubs and organizations from across the voivodeship and operates within the structure of the Polish Chess Federation. Its responsibilities include regional championships, team leagues, player classification and registration, youth chess, arbiter development, tournament coordination, and support for clubs throughout Lower Silesia. DZSzach maintains an extensive competitive calendar covering classical, rapid, blitz, team, junior, and Chess960 competition. The federation organizes the Lower Silesian Championships across several age groups and formats, administers regional team leagues, and works with clubs and municipalities on local events. Youth development forms an important part of this structure through regional junior championships and educational projects. In addition, DZSzach organizes major events with national and international significance, including the historic Akiba Rubinstein International Chess Festival in Polanica-Zdrój. Aleksander Sokólski is the current President of Dolnośląski Związek Szachowy, while Piotr Klukiewicz serves as Secretary and manages the federation office. During 2026, DZSzach organized the Lower Silesian Junior Classical Championships, the regional final of the Education Through Chess in School project, the Third League promotion tournament, and the Polish Chess960 Championship. It also completed the 62nd Akiba Rubinstein International Chess Festival in August 2026.

🏆 Regional Championships and Team Chess

DZSzach administers championships for players representing Lower Silesian clubs across several formats and age groups. Its program includes individual classical, rapid, and blitz championships as well as dedicated junior competitions. The 2026 Lower Silesian Junior Classical Championships took place in Lubin on April 11–12. Separate categories covered boys and girls from U8 through U18. Older age groups were submitted for FIDE rating, while younger sections provided an accessible pathway into formal competitive chess. Team competition is another major responsibility. In June 2026, DZSzach organized the Third Lower Silesian League promotion tournament, with the leading teams earning promotion to Poland’s Second Chess League. The federation also coordinates lower regional divisions, creating a structured route from local club chess toward national competition.

🎓 Youth Chess and Education

Youth development extends beyond championship competition. DZSzach participates actively in the nationwide Edukacja przez Szachy w Szkole – Education Through Chess in School program. On June 10, 2026, the federation and Regionalne Centrum Sportowe organized the Lower Silesian final of the project in Lubin. The event was aimed primarily at pupils in Grades 1–3 and brought together schools, teachers, students, and chess communities involved in the educational initiative. DZSzach also works with clubs across the region on junior leagues, qualification tournaments, regional championships, and development events. This structure allows young players to progress from introductory school chess to FIDE-rated junior tournaments and national championship qualification.

In 2026, the federation received the right from the Polish Chess Federation to organize the Polish Chess960 Championship. The championship took place in Wrocław on August 2, 2026, in cooperation with the Adolf Anderssen Foundation. The tournament was open regardless of age or rating and used nine Swiss-system rounds at a rapid time control of 10 minutes plus five seconds per move. It was conducted under current FIDE Chess960 regulations. This national championship illustrates DZSzach’s role beyond regional administration. The federation regularly cooperates with the Polish Chess Federation, municipalities, cultural institutions, clubs, and tournament partners to stage events with national and international participation.

🌍 Akiba Rubinstein International Chess Festival

The Akiba Rubinstein International Chess Festival in Polanica-Zdrój is the federation’s flagship international tournament project and one of Poland’s longest-running chess festivals. The 62nd edition took place from August 14–23, 2026. DZSzach organized the festival together with Teatr Zdrojowy – Centrum Kultury i Promocji w Polanicy-Zdroju, the Polish Chess Federation, and LKS Wrzos Międzyborów. The program included an invitational Grandmaster round robin and seven Open groups designed for different rating and age categories. Six Open groups were FIDE rated, while dedicated sections accommodated seniors and juniors under 14. In addition, the festival offered blitz, rapid, Chess960, bughouse, pairs competition, simultaneous exhibitions, and other side events. Therefore, Polanica-Zdrój combines elite chess with competitions accessible to club players, seniors, and young competitors.

🏛️ Organization and Leadership

Aleksander Sokólski currently serves as President of Dolnośląski Związek Szachowy. He also represents the federation within the Polish Chess Federation’s Council of Regional Federation Presidents. Piotr Klukiewicz serves as Secretary and manages the DZSzach office, making him the most practical primary contact for general federation enquiries. The current board additionally includes vice presidents responsible for sporting matters, classification and registration, youth chess, organization, promotion, and strategic projects. This structure supports DZSzach’s broad responsibilities across competitive chess, club administration, youth development, and tournament organization.
