♟️ About Schachklub Bregenz 1920

Schachklub Bregenz 1920 is a long-established chess club based in Bregenz, Vorarlberg, Austria. Founded in 1920, the club has more than a century of organized chess activity and is affiliated with the Vorarlberger Schachverband. Its permanent clubhouse is located at Gerberstraße 4–6, close to the Bregenz city library and main railway station. Regular club evenings take place on Tuesdays and Fridays. The club currently reports approximately 115 members, in addition to a substantial group of children who train at its premises. Its program covers regional team competition, internal championships, rapid and blitz series, youth training, outdoor and community chess, and international tournament organization. Bregenz is particularly well known for its International Bodensee Open, while the club’s youth program has produced Austrian and Vorarlberg championship medalists and has earned the Gold Youth Quality Seal of the Austrian Chess Federation. Alexander Moosbrugger is the current Chairman (Obmann) and principal club contact. Harald Amann serves as Tournament Director / Spielleiter, while WIM Helene Mira and FM Dmitry Atlas are central figures in the junior training program. The club remained highly active throughout 2026. It hosted the Vorarlberg U8 Championships in March, organized the 10th International Bodensee Open from May 9–17, and is preparing for the new regional team season beginning September 25, 2026.

📜 More Than a Century of Chess

Schachklub Bregenz celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2020, reflecting a continuous chess tradition in the capital of Vorarlberg. Over the decades, the club has combined competitive ambitions with an open community character. Its players have competed in the Austrian Bundesliga system as well as Vorarlberg’s regional leagues, while the club has developed several generations of junior players. Bregenz has also built a strong tradition of tournament organization. Before the current Bodensee Open series, the club organized projects such as Schach der Kulturen, Blitz am See, and the Dreikönig Tournament.

♜ Team and Club Chess

Team competition remains an important part of the annual program. During the 2025–2026 season, Bregenz fielded one team in the Landesliga, two teams in A-Klasse, and two teams in B-Klasse. These lower teams also provide competitive opportunities for juniors. The club has successfully developed young players who later progressed into Austrian Bundesliga-level chess. Internal competition continues throughout the year. Ramiz Dadic won the 2025–2026 Club Championship, finishing level on four points with Philipp Gasser but taking the title on the Sonneborn-Berger tiebreak. The next competitive cycle begins in September 2026. The Landesmannschaftsmeisterschaft starts on September 25, followed by the new Club Championship on October 2, the Rapid series on October 6, and the Blitz series on October 13.

🎓 Youth Chess and Training

Youth development is one of the strongest areas of Schachklub Bregenz. The current training program operates on several days each week and separates beginners, improving players, and stronger squad members. Harald Amann works with beginner and intermediate groups. WIM Helene Mira provides additional junior instruction, while FM Dmitry Atlas trains advanced players and the club’s competitive youth squad. The club states that its juniors have won multiple Austrian national titles and numerous Vorarlberg championships in recent years. In recognition of this work, the Austrian Chess Federation awarded Bregenz its Gold Youth Quality Seal. The club also hosted the 2026 Vorarlberg U8 Championships on March 22 at its own premises, providing competition for the youngest players in the regional system.

🌟 International Bodensee Open

The International Bodensee Open is the club’s flagship event. Launched in its present form in 2015, the festival has developed into an established international tournament in the Lake Constance region. The 10th International Bodensee Open took place from May 9–17, 2026 at the Grand Hotel Bregenz. The main tournament consisted of nine Swiss-system rounds and was rated for both FIDE and national Elo. Players received 90 minutes for the first 40 moves, followed by 30 minutes, with a 30-second increment from move one. The Open attracted 108 players from more than 20 countries, including 18 titled competitors. Irish IM Tarun Kanyamarala won the tournament with 7/9, while Italian FM Niccolò Casadio finished second. A separate International Bodensee Senior Open ran from May 10–16 over seven rounds. Together, the two competitions brought more than 200 participants to Bregenz during the anniversary edition. IO Albert Baumberger served as Tournament Director of the main Open, with IA Stephan Hofer as Chief Arbiter.

🤝 Community Chess

Schachklub Bregenz also brings chess outside its clubhouse. The club has organized Schach im Park Mariahilf, outdoor chess beside Lake Constance, rapid events, and appearances at community events in Bregenz. These activities welcome both registered competitors and recreational players. Therefore, the club combines formal tournament chess with accessible opportunities for residents and visitors to play socially. Regular club evenings continue every Tuesday and Friday from 19:30, providing a year-round meeting point for Bregenz’s chess community.
