♟️ Club Identity
ASD Circolo Palermitano Scacchi is a long-running chess club in Palermo, Sicily, Italy. The club began in 1974 and has remained one of the established names in Sicilian chess. Its home base is in Via Giuseppe Alessi 44, where it runs daily club life, lessons, and tournament activity. For players in Palermo, that continuity matters because it offers a stable place to train, play, and enter rated competition. The club also works inside the official Italian sports system through the Federazione Scacchistica Italiana. Guido Inglese has led the club since 1981, which gives the organization a rare degree of continuity. At the same time, the club combines tradition with practical activity. It supports beginners, improving amateurs, and experienced competitive players under one roof, and it remains open six days a week for regular chess life.
🏆 Tournament Activity
The club stands out because it does real competitive work throughout the year. It organizes monthly Elo Italia and FIDE-rated tournaments, and it also runs blitz and rapid events for a wide age range. Its recent internal calendar includes events such as the Torneo di Carnevale, Torneo di Natale, Halloween Gambit, and Semilampo Estivo. That steady rhythm gives local players frequent chances to compete without waiting for one flagship event. Beyond club tournaments, the association fields teams in all national categories, including the Master division. Its top competitive history is strong as well. The club recorded a second-place finish in 2007 and a fourth-place finish in 2015 in the highest national team competition. It also played in the European Club Cup in Skopje in 2015. For ambitious players, this mix of local events and high-level team chess makes the club especially relevant.
🌱 Youth Training and Community Activity
Youth work is one of the club’s strongest features. It runs school chess projects involving more than 1,000 students each year, which gives Palermo a broad entry point into organized chess. Training also covers all levels, from children and adult beginners to stronger players who want deeper tactical and strategic preparation. The club’s instructor group includes Michel Bifulco, Riccardo Gueci, Alessandra Arnetta, Gianluca Corsino, Guido Morello, Laura Gueci, and Cristina Farinella, with national and club coaching roles across the program. In addition, the club supports focused training before major events, including a pre-national youth preparation stage with advanced and intermediate groups. Results in school and junior chess are also concrete. In 2023, its school teams won two regional titles and five podium finishes in the Sicilian student championships. The club had already earned the title of best Sicilian youth club in 2018, and it also took second place nationally in the CIS U10 team event that year.
