Union of Chess Players of Kalamaria

♟️ Club Identity

Union of Chess Players of Kalamaria is a chess club and tournament organizer based in Kalamaria, Thessaloniki, Greece. The association was registered on August 29, 1996 and operates from Zacharia Papantoniou 14 in Kalamaria. It forms part of a larger local chess base that also works closely with the Union of Chess Players of Thessaloniki and the G. Ioakeimidis Chess Academy through the shared Skakistis platform. For players, that gives the club a clear year-round identity. It is not only a venue for occasional events. It is a stable local organizer with its own playing base, regular communication channels, and a visible role in chess life in eastern Thessaloniki.

🏆 Tournament Activity

Tournament organization sits at the center of the club’s public profile. The club is the main organizer of the Open International Tournament of Kalamaria, one of the best-known recurring chess events in the region. The event returned in 2024 for its 17th edition, continued with the 18th edition in 2025, and already appears on the calendar for 2026. The 2025 structure included an open group for stronger rated players, a second rating section, and a children’s section. Beyond that flagship tournament, the club also co-organizes broader local festival activity such as the Christmas Chess Festival and academy events for younger players. This gives the organizer a real annual rhythm rather than a single isolated open.

🌱 Training and Community Chess

The club also places strong emphasis on training and junior development. Its official channels promote daily lessons for all ages, with groups for beginners, learning players, competitive players, and higher-level training, both in person and online. That training work continues across the calendar. In 2025, the club ran a dedicated summer lesson cycle from mid-June to mid-July. It also stays active in youth-facing tournament work. The Open Christmas Academy Championship 2024 brought together 74 children, which shows a meaningful youth base rather than a symbolic junior section. For families and improving players, that matters. The club combines regular lessons, academy competition, and larger public tournaments under one recognizable organizer identity.
