♟️ About Eric Golf Vigil

Eric Golf Vigil is a chess organizer and US Chess Senior Tournament Director based in Iowa City, Iowa. His work spans state championships, open tournaments, scholastic events, senior and girls’ qualifiers, FIDE-rated rapid and blitz competitions, and unconventional destination events. He organizes many of his tournaments through Hawkeye Chess Club and remains closely involved with the Iowa State Chess Association. Vigil is also active in chess administration. He currently serves as Treasurer of the Iowa State Chess Association for the 2025–2027 term, and US Chess lists him as an Iowa Delegate. His tournament work combines traditional state-level competition with smaller community events, including inexpensive rapid and blitz tournaments designed to create more frequent rated playing opportunities. In 2025, Vigil received the US Chess Senior Tournament Director Award. His 2026 calendar has remained active across several formats. On August 28–30, 2026, he is scheduled to direct the 71st Iowa Open weekend in Iowa City. Moreover, upcoming events include FIDE-rated blitz in Coralville, the Let There Be Light series, and additional community tournaments. He is also developing the second edition of his distinctive chess-at-sea festival for January 2027.

🏆 Iowa Tournament Activity

Vigil organizes and directs events across the Iowa chess calendar. In March 2026, he was the organizer contact for both the Iowa Senior Qualifier and Iowa Girls Championship in Iowa City. The Senior Qualifier determined Iowa’s representative for the Irwin Senior Tournament of Champions, while the Girls Championship provided a pathway to the national girls’ invitational held alongside the US Open. His recurring Let There Be Light tournaments provide another part of the local calendar. The series mixes short Swiss competitions with evening events and emphasizes accessible entry fees and opportunities for scholastic players. The September 19, 2026 edition includes US Chess and FIDE-rated play, with both a rapid tournament and a separate evening Swiss. Vigil also organizes recurring Diversions FIDE Blitz tournaments in Coralville. These events use a double-round Swiss structure with fast G/3+2 games and provide both US Chess and FIDE-rated competition. They complement his longer classical events by giving Iowa players regular access to internationally rated speed chess.

♜ 71st Iowa Open

One of Vigil’s most important current assignments is the 71st Iowa Open, scheduled for August 28–30, 2026 at the Graduate Hotel in Iowa City. The weekend includes the Iowa Open Championship together with companion Reserve and Rated Beginners competitions. The main championship uses a five-round classical Swiss format, while the broader weekend provides sections for players across a wide rating range. The event is listed by US Chess as FIDE rated and carries US Chess Grand Prix points. Vigil is the published organizer contact, continuing his long involvement with tournament chess in Iowa.

🚢 Captain Vigil’s Chess Festival at Sea

Vigil is particularly known for staging chess in locations outside the conventional hotel or chess-club setting. He has described organizing events in places including a zoo, brewery, greenhouse, parks, city streets, prisons, and even aboard a cruise ship. That approach produced the first Captain Vigil’s Chess Festival at Sea, held aboard the Norwegian Encore from January 10–17, 2026. The event departed from Miami and combined a six-round FIDE-rated classical tournament with additional chess activities during the cruise. Registration reached 41 players, and the event sold out. A second edition, Captain Vigil’s Chess Festival at Sea 2, is scheduled for January 9–16, 2027, aboard the Norwegian Star from San Diego. The program includes a FIDE-rated classical Swiss, FIDE rapid events, Fischer Random blitz, lectures, and additional side tournaments. Before departure, Vigil is also scheduled to organize Captain Vigil’s San Diego Sendoff on January 8.

🏛️ Iowa Chess Leadership

Alongside tournament direction, Vigil holds an active administrative role within the Iowa State Chess Association. He currently serves as Treasurer, with his term listed as 2025–2027. US Chess also lists Eric Golf Vigil as a Delegate, connecting his state-level activity with the federation’s national governance structure. His 2025 US Chess award recognized his tournament-directing work. When discussing the award, Vigil emphasized his interest in bringing chess into unusual settings and credited other tournament directors who helped him develop his skills. That philosophy remains visible in both his Iowa events and his expanding destination-tournament program.
