♟️ Club Identity
L’Échiquier Grenoblois is a long-standing chess club and organizer in Grenoble, France. The club dates back to 1962 and remains one of the most active chess structures in the Isère area. It combines club play, coaching, and public events in one program. Its main base is now on Rue de l’Ancien Champ de Mars in central Grenoble. The French federation lists the club in Nationale 2 for team competition and Nationale 1 Jeunes for youth team play. It also carries the Club Formateur label. For players, that means the club is not only busy. It also has a real competitive and training framework that supports both regular members and ambitious juniors.
🏆 Tournament Activity
Tournament organization is a major part of the club’s identity. L’Échiquier Grenoblois runs a broad local and regional calendar. On the club side, it stages four Wednesday tournaments each year, with nine rounds and classical time control. It also runs a FIDE-rated blitz event on the second Thursday of each month. Beyond internal competition, the club promotes and organizes named events such as the Tournoi des Arméniens, the Tournoi Rapide GEM, the 9th Saint-Égrève International Rapid Open, the 22nd Open of Villard-de-Lans, and the Open International d’Échecs de L’Alpe d’Huez 2026. This gives chess players several entry points. Some events are local and regular. Others have a wider regional or international pull.
🌱 Training and Community Activity
The club also invests heavily in training and community work. Its chess school starts from age five and currently offers seven youth levels, from Baby Chess to advanced competitive groups. In addition, the club runs adult courses and stronger development tracks for improving players. In February 2026, it organized a five-day youth training camp for players aged 6 to 15. The club also launched a women’s section, designed as an open and welcoming entry point rather than a separate space. Beyond that, it has built visible work around autism and inclusion. That activity received attention from the French federation’s social and disability commission, as well as support from the GEG foundation. As a result, L’Échiquier Grenoblois serves chess players in several ways at once: competition, coaching, inclusion, and community outreach.
