♟️ About Šahovski klub Slavonac Gradište

Šahovski klub Slavonac Gradište is an active chess club based in Gradište, Vukovar-Srijem County, Croatia. Organized chess in the town dates back to the early 1960s, when Ivan Đermić began bringing local players together and developing chess activities. Documentary evidence from 1962–1963 confirms that a functioning chess club already existed in Gradište during that period. The modern organization was formally re-established on March 15, 2001. After several quieter years, the club entered a new period of development under President Branko Vidačković, with particular emphasis on youth chess, regular competition, and tournament organization. The club now maintains a dedicated chess school and participates in both senior and junior team competition. Tournament organization has become one of Slavonac Gradište’s strongest activities. Its flagship event is the Open Gradište, an international FIDE-rated classical tournament that attracts players from Croatia and neighboring countries. The club also organizes and supports rapid, blitz, memorial, junior, and local tournaments while maintaining an active presence in the chess community of eastern Croatia.

🎓 Youth Chess and Development

Youth development has played a major role in the club’s revival. When the club renewed its activities in 2018, it launched a recruitment campaign among local schoolchildren. Around 30 children initially joined its chess school, providing the foundation for a new generation of Slavonac players. Young members have since participated in Croatian cadet leagues, regional championships, school competitions, and tournaments in neighboring Bosnia and Herzegovina. The club continues to maintain a dedicated Škola šaha as part of its current structure.

♜ Team Chess

ŠK Slavonac Gradište competes within the Croatian league system. For 2026, the senior team is registered in the 3. A Hrvatska Šahovska Liga – Istok, competing against clubs from across eastern Croatia. The club also maintains cadet activity, allowing younger players to move from chess-school training into official team competition.

🌍 Open Gradište 2026

The club’s principal event is the International Chess Tournament Open Gradište. The 6th Open Gradište takes place from August 21–27, 2026 at the Chess Center for Children, Adults and Pensioners, Trg Hrvatskih Velikana 36, Gradište. The tournament is organized directly by ŠK Slavonac Gradište. The competition consists of nine FIDE-rated classical rounds played at 90 minutes plus a 30-second increment per move. The 2026 edition offers a €5,900 net prize fund and is open to players from Croatia and other federations. Srećko Papac serves as Tournament Director, while club President and International Arbiter Branko Vidačković is Chief Arbiter. The arbiting team also includes IA Ivica Leaković and additional Croatian national arbiters. The Open has developed into an important summer event for the club and provides local juniors with an opportunity to compete alongside experienced players and titled competitors.

🤝 Chess in Gradište

ŠK Slavonac maintains a close relationship with the local community. The Municipality of Gradište is a major supporter of the club and its tournament program. The club also works within the Croatian Chess Federation and the chess structure of Vukovar-Srijem County. Its combination of youth training, league chess, international tournaments, and local events has helped establish Gradište as an active chess center despite the relatively small size of the municipality.

Branko Vidačković is the current President of Šahovski klub Slavonac Gradište and the organization’s principal public Contact Person. The club’s official website continues to list him as President and publishes his direct telephone number and email address. Vidačković is also an International Arbiter and remains directly involved in the club’s major tournaments, including the 2026 Open Gradište.
