♟️ About Lignano Scacchi

Lignano Scacchi is an independent chess-organizing committee associated with Lignano Sabbiadoro, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Italy. Rather than operating as a conventional membership chess club, it focuses on organizing large FIDE-rated tournaments and festival-style chess events. Its principal project is the Festival Internazionale “Bella Italia”, held at the Bella Italia EFA Village and designed around a combination of serious tournament chess, accommodation, and the Adriatic seaside setting. The organization works with the Italian Chess Federation and external chess partners on events for adults, juniors, titled players, and club competitors. Its tournament structure has included classical Opens divided by rating level, blitz side events, national youth team championships, and European-level competition. Lignano Scacchi has also collaborated with UniChess on major projects, allowing the local organizing team to combine its destination-event experience with the technical infrastructure required for larger national and international tournaments. IO Andrea Bisaro is the Tournament Director and principal public contact for Lignano Scacchi. He has extensive experience organizing major chess events in Friuli-Venezia Giulia and has also served in leadership roles at tournaments outside Lignano. In August 2026, he directed the 5th Festival Internazionale Bella Italia, which concluded on August 23 after bringing 178 players from 20 federations to Lignano Sabbiadoro.

🌍 Festival Internazionale “Bella Italia”

The Festival Internazionale Bella Italia has become the central event associated with the Lignano Scacchi identity. The tournament takes place at Bella Italia EFA Village, a large seaside sports and holiday complex in Lignano Sabbiadoro. The festival uses a multi-section format so that players can compete primarily against opponents of similar strength. The strongest Master tournament normally runs over nine rounds, while additional Open A, B, and C competitions use seven rounds. All sections use classical FIDE time controls, while the tournament infrastructure includes accommodation, meals, playing facilities, and access to recreational services within the same complex. This format allows international visitors and families to combine a week-long chess tournament with a stay on the Adriatic coast.

🏆 5th Festival Internazionale Bella Italia 2026

The 5th Festival Internazionale Bella Italia took place from August 17–23, 2026. The festival consisted of four FIDE-rated classical tournaments and offered a substantial cash prize fund. The Master section used nine Swiss-system rounds, while Opens A, B, and C each used seven rounds. All four competitions were played at 90 minutes plus 30 seconds per move. The 2026 festival attracted 178 players representing 20 federations, including seven Grandmasters and seven International Masters in the main tournament. GM Ortik Nigmatov won the Master with 7.5/9, finishing one point ahead of a group on 6.5. The Open A was won by young Uzbek player Zafar Tolipov with 6.5/7. Alessio Brombin won Open B on tiebreak with 5.5/7, while Davide Zheng Chenfeng took first place in Open C after a four-way tie on 5.5 points. Andrea Bisaro served as Tournament Director, while IA Gabriele Carbonari was Chief Arbiter.

🎓 National Youth Team Chess

Lignano Scacchi has also organized major youth competition. In 2025, the organizing committee hosted the Campionato Italiano a Squadre U18, the Italian Youth Team Chess Championship, at Bella Italia EFA Village. The championship ran from October 30 to November 2 and featured national team competitions from U8 through U18. Italian Chess Federation records show substantial participation across the six age categories. Hosting the national youth team championship expanded Lignano Scacchi’s activity beyond its summer international festival and demonstrated its ability to manage large multi-section events involving young players, clubs, coaches, and families.

🌟 International Tournament Experience

The Lignano organizing network has also been involved with high-level European chess. In 2024, the Italian Chess Federation hosted the European Senior Chess Championship in Lignano Sabbiadoro, again using Bella Italia EFA Village as the official playing venue and accommodation center. Andrea Bisaro served as one of the Tournament Directors alongside GM, International Organizer, and FIDE Senior Trainer Roberto Mogranzini. The championship featured separate 50+ and 65+ Open and Women’s competitions. This experience, together with the recurring Bella Italia festival and Italian youth team championship, has established Lignano Scacchi primarily as a specialized tournament organizer, rather than as a traditional local chess club.
