♟️ About Club d’Escacs Sant Martí
Club d’Escacs Sant Martí is an established chess organization in Barcelona, Spain. A group of local enthusiasts founded it on 26 December 1974. Initially, the organization operated as the chess section of the Sant Martí de Provençals neighbourhood association. Therefore, its history remains closely connected with the local community.
The club moved to the Centre Cívic Sant Martí in 1982. At the same time, it became an independent chess organization. Since then, the civic centre has remained its main home for training, tournaments, league matches, and social activities. Moreover, the club celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2024 through special competitions, exhibitions, and public events.
Today, Club d’Escacs Sant Martí welcomes federated players, amateurs, adults, juniors, and complete beginners. Eduard Arilla Santos serves as President and represents the organization publicly. In addition, experienced players, instructors, arbiters, and volunteers support the club’s activities. This shared structure allows the organization to maintain a broad chess program throughout the year.
🏆 Tournaments and Competitive Activity
The club organizes a varied program of classical, rapid, blitz, amateur, women’s, junior, and internal tournaments. Consequently, players can choose competitions that match their age, rating, and preferred time control. The annual calendar also combines open events with tournaments reserved for club members.
Its flagship competition is the Open Internacional Sant Martí. The tournament has developed into one of the club’s most important international projects. In 2026, it reached its 26th edition and included separate Group A and Group B competitions. Moreover, the festival featured an accompanying FIDE-rated blitz tournament.
The club also organizes the Torneig Clàssic Sant Martí, Torneig Actiu Sant Martí, Torneig de Ràpides, and annual social championships. In addition, its calendar includes a women’s rapid tournament, an amateur competition, and junior events. These tournaments create regular playing opportunities beyond the main summer festival.
Club d’Escacs Sant Martí also participates in the Catalan Chess League with several teams. Over the years, its teams have competed across different regional and national divisions. Therefore, members can progress from local competition into stronger team chess. The club has also produced Catalan champions, Spanish youth champions, titled players, and international arbiters.
🎓 Chess Courses and Club Community
Chess education forms an important part of the club’s activity. The organization provides separate courses for players under 16 and for adults. Moreover, classes are divided by playing level. This structure helps beginners learn the fundamentals while stronger participants develop advanced tournament skills.
The courses take place at the Centre Cívic Sant Martí during the school year. Students study tactics, strategy, calculation, endgames, and practical decision-making. In addition, they can apply their knowledge through club tournaments and rated competition. Therefore, training and tournament play form one connected development pathway.
The club also maintains a strong social identity. Members can join internal championships, team events, anniversary competitions, and the traditional Trofeu Fundació. Meanwhile, non-members can enter many of its open tournaments. This combination supports both a stable membership base and wider community participation.
Club d’Escacs Sant Martí works closely with chess federations, public institutions, and the Centre Cívic Sant Martí. As a result, it can provide suitable venues, official rating conditions, and experienced tournament staff. Above all, the club connects competitive chess, education, volunteer work, and neighbourhood life in Barcelona.
