Club d’Escacs Sant Martí is a chess club based in the Sant Martí district of Barcelona, Spain. Founded on December 26, 1974, it began as the chess section of the Sant Martí de Provençals neighborhood association. In 1982, the club moved to the Centre Cívic Sant Martí and became an independent organization. The civic center remains its principal base for tournament play, training, league matches, and community chess. The club maintains an extensive competitive program covering classical, rapid, and blitz chess, internal championships, junior activities, amateur events, women’s chess, and team competition in the Catalan league system. It also provides chess courses for adults and younger players. Its flagship competition is the Open Internacional Sant Martí, one of the club’s longest-running projects and a regular part of the Catalan International Open Circuit. Eduard Arilla Santos is the current President and principal public contact. He represented the club when it received a silver medal at the 2025 Premis Sant Martí in recognition of its 50 years of activity. In July 2026, he also served as Chief Organizer of the FIDE-rated Sant Martí Blitz Open. The club’s 2026 International Open was completed on July 21 and produced its largest classical field to date, with more than 340 players across the two main sections.

📜 History and Development

A group of local chess enthusiasts established the original chess section in 1974, with Manuel Vall serving as its first President. During its initial years, activities took place within the neighborhood association. The move to Centre Cívic Sant Martí in December 1982 marked an important transition. The organization became independent and subsequently expanded its membership, tournament calendar, and youth participation. The club celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2024 with commemorative activities and tournaments. In November 2025, Barcelona’s Sant Martí district formally recognized this history through the silver medal presented at the 63rd Premis Sant Martí.

🏆 Tournament Activity

Sant Martí organizes chess throughout the year rather than focusing exclusively on its summer festival. Its program has included the Torneig Clàssic Sant Martí, rapid and blitz competitions, amateur tournaments, women’s events, junior competition, and championships for club members. The organization also participates actively in the Lliga Catalana d’Escacs, fielding teams within the Catalan federation structure. Consequently, members can combine individual tournaments with regular team competition. Education complements tournament activity. Courses are organized for younger players and adults at different skill levels, linking formal instruction with practical club competition.

🌍 Open Internacional Sant Martí 2026

The 26th Open Internacional Sant Martí took place from July 13–21, 2026 at Centre Cívic Sant Martí in Barcelona. The festival consisted of two nine-round classical Swiss tournaments. Group A was open primarily to players rated at least 1950 and was valid for international title norms, while Group B accommodated players rated up to 1949. Both sections counted for FIDE, Spanish, and Catalan ratings. Players received 90 minutes plus 30 seconds per move. The combined classical field reached more than 340 players, with competitors representing numerous national federations. GM Johan-Sebastian Christiansen of Norway won Group A with an outstanding 8/9, finishing ahead of GM Brandon Jacobson and IM Alex Villa Tornero. In Group B, Akio Hayakawa of Japan finished first with 8/9. The festival also included the 26th Sant Martí Blitz Open. The nine-round 3+2 competition attracted players from 24 nationalities, with Poland’s Szymon Zajac taking first place.

🏛️ Organization and Club Community

Eduard Arilla Santos serves as President and remains directly involved in tournament organization. Current official tournament materials also identify Evarist Pérez and Pablo Castillo among the principal contacts for the International Open. The club’s permanent home at Centre Cívic Sant Martí provides a stable base for chess in the neighborhood. Moreover, the organization combines the work of players, instructors, arbiters, and volunteers to maintain both its international festival and its regular local program. This structure allows Sant Martí to serve several levels of chess simultaneously, from beginners and juniors learning the game to experienced competitors and titled players participating in FIDE-rated events.
