Federação Piauiense de Xadrez

♟️ About the Organizer

Federação Piauiense de Xadrez, commonly abbreviated as FPIX, is the state chess federation responsible for promoting and coordinating organized chess throughout Piauí, Brazil. Based in Teresina, the federation works with chess clubs, players, tournament organizers, arbiters, schools, municipalities, and the Brazilian Chess Confederation. FPIX was founded on February 27, 1994, following years of development led by the Clube Teresinense de Xadrez and other local chess organizations. Five clubs participated in the founding assembly, which elected Dr. José Gomes da Silva as the federation’s first president. Since then, FPIX has supported the expansion of competitive chess beyond Teresina and helped establish organized chess activities in different municipalities across the state. The federation is currently led by Luís Carlos Sales.

🏆 Tournaments and Chess Events

FPIX organizes and supports a comprehensive annual program of classical, rapid, and blitz competitions. Its activities include the Piauí State Chess Championships, municipal championships, youth festivals, qualifying competitions, arbiter courses, team events, and nationally rated tournaments conducted in partnership with the Brazilian Chess Confederation. Major events in its 2026 program include the Festival Nacional da Juventude, the Magistral Dr. José Gomes, the Aberto do Brasil Memorial Dr. José Gomes, the Festival Piauiense de Xadrez, the Campeonato Piauiense Absoluto, and the XI Aberto do Brasil – Taça Cidade de Teresina. Several of these competitions are rated by both FIDE and CBX, while others provide qualification places for state and Brazilian championship finals. Luís Carlos Sales is regularly listed by CBX as the chief organizer or tournament director of FPIX events.

🌱 Chess Development in Piauí

Alongside major tournaments, Federação Piauiense de Xadrez develops regional and community chess through partnerships with affiliated clubs, educational institutions, municipal authorities, and local organizers. Its statewide tournament circuit encourages cities outside the capital to conduct official competitions and gives players opportunities to qualify for the Piauí championship finals. FPIX also supports youth categories, school chess, women’s participation, arbiter education, and events for players of different ages and rating levels. In 2026, the federation hosted an international round-robin tournament designed to offer a FIDE title-norm opportunity and welcomed titled players from several South American countries. Through regular competitions, technical supervision, rating submissions, training initiatives, and online promotion, FPIX connects the Piauí chess community with the wider Brazilian and international tournament system.
