♟️ About A.S.D. L’Alfiere

A.S.D. L’Alfiere is a chess association based in Caltanissetta, Sicily, Italy. The club is affiliated with the Federazione Scacchistica Italiana (FSI) and operates from the Dopolavoro Ferroviario on Via Alcide De Gasperi. Its current registration within the Italian sports system dates from March 2018. As of August 2026, the national sports register recorded 36 competitive members, confirming an active federation-based membership in central Sicily. The association combines regular club meetings, chess courses, FIDE-rated tournaments, Italian team competition, and community chess. Members meet on Saturday afternoons at the Dopolavoro Ferroviario, where the club provides a stable location for training, friendly games, tournaments, and meetings for players of different ages and levels. Beyond Caltanissetta, L’Alfiere has expanded its tournament activity to nearby San Cataldo and participates in the Campionato Italiano a Squadre (CIS). Angelo Calamera is the current President and legal representative of A.S.D. L’Alfiere and remains the principal contact for both club and tournament activity. He also manages the club’s teams in the Italian Team Championship. The association has been especially active during 2026: it organized the 2nd Festival di Scacchi “Città di San Cataldo” in May and is now preparing its flagship 4th Festival di Scacchi “Città di Caltanissetta” from September 11–13, 2026 at Hotel Ventura.

📜 Development and Community Chess

A.S.D. L’Alfiere has developed around a strong local-club model in Caltanissetta. Its headquarters at the Dopolavoro Ferroviario provide a regular meeting point rather than functioning only as an administrative address. Saturday activities include courses, tournaments, practice games, and informal chess meetings. Therefore, the club serves both established federation players and people who are taking their first steps into organized chess. The association also promotes chess through larger public events. Its tournaments have previously used prominent Caltanissetta venues such as Palazzo Moncada, allowing competitive chess to reach audiences beyond the club itself.

♜ Italian Team Championship

Team chess is an important part of L’Alfiere’s competitive program. The club entered the Campionato Italiano a Squadre in recent seasons and achieved significant progress through the national league structure. After competing in Serie C during the 2025 season, the principal A.S.D. L’Alfiere CL team earned the right to compete in Serie B in 2026. At the same time, a second L’Alfiere team earned a place in Serie C, giving the association representation at two national levels. Current team lists include players such as Matteo Pio Savarino, Rosario Amico, Paolo Di Martino, Christian Chieffalo, Filippo Maria Licenziato, Lorenzo Mistretta, Rustam Karimov, and other regular members. Angelo Calamera remains the official team representative and also appears on the club’s competitive roster.

🏆 Città di San Cataldo Chess Festival

L’Alfiere has extended its tournament program beyond Caltanissetta through the Festival di Scacchi “Città di San Cataldo.” The inaugural edition took place in May 2025 at Palazzo di Città – Sala Borsellino. It attracted 47 players across three rating sections. IM Himal Gusain produced a perfect 5/5 performance to win Open A. The 2nd Città di San Cataldo Chess Festival followed from May 8–10, 2026 at the same municipal venue. The event again featured three FIDE-rated classical sections and five Swiss-system rounds. Players competed at a time control of 90 minutes plus a 30-second increment per move, continuing the club’s compact weekend-festival format.

🌟 Festival di Scacchi “Città di Caltanissetta”

The Festival di Scacchi “Città di Caltanissetta” is now the principal recurring tournament organized by A.S.D. L’Alfiere. The series began in 2023, when its first edition attracted 78 players from across Sicily. Subsequent editions increased the event’s international profile, with titled players and competitors from outside Italy joining the field. The 4th Festival di Scacchi “Città di Caltanissetta” is scheduled for September 11–13, 2026 at Hotel Ventura in Caltanissetta. The festival consists of three FIDE-rated sections: Open A: players rated above 1700 Open B: players approximately between 1500 and 1800 Open C: players rated below 1600 All sections play five Swiss-system rounds. The published time control is 90 minutes plus a 30-second increment per move, with two double-round days completing the tournament within a three-day weekend. By combining local club development with recurring FIDE-rated festivals in Caltanissetta and San Cataldo, L’Alfiere has established a consistent tournament program for chess players in central Sicily.

🏛️ Organization and Leadership

Angelo Calamera is the current President of A.S.D. L’Alfiere. The Italian Chess Federation also lists Massimo Cirrito, Salvatore Guagenti, Flavio Terenzi, and Samuele Vecchio as members of the club’s current governing council. His role provides continuity between the association’s weekly community activities and its larger federation-rated events. The club’s combination of regular local chess, national team competition, training, and recurring international-rated festivals makes A.S.D. L’Alfiere an important part of the organized chess community in Caltanissetta and central Sicily.
