⏱️ Time Control & Pairings

Each age group runs as a 9-round Swiss System tournament with separate Open and Girls sections. Players use the time control of 90 minutes per player per game with a 30-second increment from move 1. A player forfeits if they do not arrive at the board within 30 minutes of the round start time. Final standings follow total points, with tie-breaks applied in this order: direct encounter, greater number of wins, Buchholz, Buchholz Cut 1, Buchholz Cut 2, and Sonneborn-Berger.

👥 Organizer

Canterbury Chess Club Incorporated organizes the event on behalf of the New Zealand Chess Federation, the Oceania Chess Confederation, and FIDE, delivering a structured continental youth championship with consistent schedules across all divisions and a central venue built for large-scale events.

All divisions play in the Limes Room, with the Victoria Room used for analysis and waiting (subject to playing numbers). The venue applies strict conduct requirements, including no eating inside, no smoking or vaping on the property, and supervised children whenever they are not in the playing room.

🚗 How to Get There

Christchurch Town Hall sits in central Christchurch on Kilmore Street. Paid parking options are available nearby, including paid car parks directly opposite the venue on Kilmore Street, and Kilmore Street operates as a one-way street heading west. Public transport serves the venue via bus stop #54520, with routes 1, 29, and 95 stopping outside; route 29 also connects to the airport, which can help on departure day. If you use buses from outside the CBD, transfer at the bus interchange and continue on the most convenient route, or walk about 15–20 minutes from the interchange.

🧾 Other

Appeals must be submitted in writing within 15 minutes of the end of the relevant playing session and require a NZ$100 bond, which may be returned if the appeal succeeds (or at the Appeals Committee’s discretion). Medal awards follow tie-break application, and the organizer may merge age divisions to support direct title awarding when entry requirements and representation make it appropriate.
