Maia Chess Open Portugal 2026 takes place from August 21-29, 2026, in Maia, Portugal. This is a chess tournament in Maia, Portugal, in 2026. It brings a full classical week to TECMAIA and gives players a structured nine-round format in one of the country’s established summer chess festivals.
The event runs with two parallel sections: Maia Masters and U2000. Therefore, it serves both higher-rated players who want strong opposition and players below 2000 Elo who want a separate title fight. The tournament also counts for FIDE and FPX rating, and the Maia Masters section offers GM and IM norm opportunities.
The wider festival also adds side events around the main open, including the Douro Blitz Cruise, Queens Blitz, Maia Rapid Cup, masterclasses, and the Night Chess Party. As a result, the week offers more than just the main rounds, while the official accommodation page gives players several nearby hotel options in Maia.

⏱️ Time Control & Pairings
The event uses a nine-round Swiss system in both sections. Each player receives 90 minutes for the first 40 moves, then 30 more minutes for the rest of the game, with a 30-second increment from move one. In addition, the tournament direction may use accelerated pairings in the first two or three rounds, depending on the size of the field.
The Maia Masters section requires a FIDE standard rating of 2000 or higher from the August 2026 list. Meanwhile, the U2000 section requires a FIDE standard rating below 2000. The organizers may still admit selected players below 2000 into the Masters event under the published surcharge rules.
Several practical rules matter here. Players may arrive up to 30 minutes after the start of a round. Moreover, the event does not allow draw agreements before Black completes move 30 unless an arbiter approves it. Players may request three half-point byes through round 4, while later byes score zero points. Electronic devices are not allowed in the playing area, and the venue provides a reception desk where players must deposit them during games.
🏆 Prize Fund

Maia Masters carries the larger top prizes, while U2000 offers its own full payout ladder. In both sections, cash prizes do not accumulate, and players must attend the prize ceremony to receive them. The youth awards in U2000 are trophies only, so they do not enter the cash total.
