⏱️ Time Control & Pairings
The event uses a five-round classical format. First, the 3-day schedule starts on Friday evening and continues with two rounds on Saturday and two rounds on Sunday. Meanwhile, the 2-day schedule starts on Saturday morning and then merges into the common weekend timetable. Every player receives 90 minutes for the game plus a 30-second increment from move one.
Texas Chess Center uses US Chess monthly ratings for pairings in this event. Moreover, the default late-forfeit time is one hour. The organizer also allows re-entry for half of the late-fee price, which gives players an additional option if their first start does not go as planned.
The published play-up policy is also important. A player may request to play up if the player’s monthly or live rating is within 150 points of the next section’s floor, usually with a fee. However, if the player’s live or monthly rating already meets that next floor, Texas Chess Center waives the play-up fee. Alternate ratings may also be considered for unrated US Chess players under the center’s tournament rules.
🏆 Prize Fund
The confirmed cash prize fund totals $1,540. The Championship section awards $1,120 in guaranteed cash prizes, while the U1800 section awards $420. The U1400 section does not add cash to the total because it awards trophies only.
The prize breakdown is below.

|---|---|
| Championship | 1st $640, 2nd $320, 3rd $160 |
| U1800 | 1st $240, 2nd $120, 3rd $60 |

Texas Chess Center also offers titled-player incentives for this event. The first three GMs or IMs to enter are guaranteed at least $200 for a GM or $100 for an IM if they play all rounds, and the offer remains valid until the late-fee deadline. In addition, players with a lifetime peak FIDE rating of 2300+ may enter free before the late-fee deadline by emailing the organizer.
👥 Sections / Groups
The tournament has three sections. The first is the Championship section. The second is U1800. The third is U1400, and that section is US Chess rated only rather than FIDE rated. This structure gives stronger players a FIDE-rated top section while still keeping a separate entry path for lower-rated players.
The section overview is below.
| Section | Rating / eligibility notes | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Championship | Top section | FIDE rated |
| U1800 | Under 1800 section | FIDE rated |
| U1400 | Under 1400 section | US Chess rated only |
| Playing up | Available for eligible players | +$30 when a fee applies |
Texas Chess Center also states that players without a FIDE ID can still enter a FIDE event and complete the registration form so the organizer can help arrange that ID process. To earn an official FIDE rating, a player must complete five games against previously FIDE-rated opponents, score at least 0.5 total, and achieve a performance rating of at least 1400.

The refund policy is also clearly stated. Players receive a full refund if they cancel more than 48 hours before the event begins. If they cancel between 48 hours and 2 hours before the start, Texas Chess Center issues a 50% refund. However, cancellations within 2 hours of the start time and no-shows do not receive refunds.
Late-arrival rules matter as well. A player who arrives more than 30 minutes late without notice risks a forfeit or reassignment under FIDE rules, and any player who has not arrived in the playing hall by 60 minutes after the round begins forfeits the game. Texas Chess Center also asks players to email the organizer to cancel registration before the applicable deadline.
