⏱️ Time Control & Pairings

The European Senior Individual Chess Championship 2026 uses a 9-round Swiss system. Each game uses 90 minutes for 40 moves, then 30 minutes to finish, with a 30-second increment from move 1. The default time is 30 minutes for every round.

The championship applies the following tie-break order: direct encounter results (when applicable), Buchholz Cut 1, Buchholz, greater number of games played with Black, and greater number of wins. For unplayed games, the tournament applies the current FIDE Competition Rules for tie-break calculation.

Women’s sections rule: the championship runs the women’s tournaments separately only if a category has more than 9 women participants. If a women’s category has fewer than 9 participants, the tournament merges it with the corresponding open category while keeping women’s prizes available.
