6th International Chess Tournament Città di Amelia 2026 takes place from November 20-22, 2026, in Amelia, Italy. The event offers three FIDE-rated classical sections as part of the Amelia Grand Chess Tour 2026.

This is a chess tournament in Amelia, Italy, in 2026. Players will compete in Open A, Open B, and Open C, with five Swiss-system rounds and a classical time control.

The tournament also includes two FIDE-rated side events before the main weekend. In addition, participants receive a player package, a gadget, and a commemorative tournament T-shirt.

⏱️ Time Control & Pairings

Players receive 90 minutes for the game, plus a 30-second increment per move. The same classical time control applies to Open A, Open B, and Open C.

The main tournaments use a 5-round Swiss system. In addition, the organizer applies International Buchholz for final rankings.

Tie-breaks follow this order: Buchholz Cut 1, Buchholz Total, and average rating of opponents.

Players may arrive up to 60 minutes after the scheduled start of a round. After that limit, the player loses by forfeit.

The tournament also uses Pairing Allocated Bye rules. A PAB gives one point.

💰 Prize Fund

The tournament offers €3,330 in published cash prizes, which equals approximately USD 3,875. Prizes are not cumulative and not divisible.

Special trophies and non-cash prizes are also planned for selected categories. These include best rating variation, U16, 65+, and female prizes.

All cups and trophies are handmade. The organizer commissioned them from psychological rehabilitation centers in Amelia.

🧩 Sections / Groups

The main tournament has three playing sections.

Open A is for players rated above 1800. However, the organizer may add up to five wild-card players with lower ratings.

Open B is for players rated below 1799. This section gives club players a separate competitive field with main prizes and a rating-band prize.

Open C is for players rated below 1600. It also includes a reduced fee for U16 players and gives developing players a dedicated tournament group.

Italian players and foreign players resident in Italy need valid FSI 2026 membership. Players who do not yet have the required membership may complete it through the organizer at the venue.

Players should plan carefully for Friday afternoon travel. The first classical round starts at 17:30, so early arrival in Amelia is strongly recommended.

Players should pay by bank transfer before the relevant deadline. To receive the reduced fee, payment must arrive by November 1, 2026.

The payment note should include the tournament name and the player’s T-shirt size. In addition, payments made after the early deadline and by November 16 must use instant bank transfer.

The tournament uses several playing venues in Amelia. Sala Conti Palladini and Sala Eugenio Checchi are located inside the municipal library complex, while Palazzo Venturelli is a historic palace in the town center.

The multi-venue format places the tournament inside Amelia’s historic setting. Therefore, players should check their assigned playing room before each round and allow enough time to move between venues if needed.

🚆 How to Get There

Players should travel to Amelia in the province of Terni, Umbria. The main playing venues are in or near the historic center, so players should plan their final arrival carefully.

Drivers can use Amelia, Terni, as the destination and then continue toward the municipal library or Palazzo Venturelli. However, the historic center may require extra time for parking and walking.

Players arriving by train can travel toward Terni or nearby regional stations, then continue to Amelia by bus, taxi, or private transfer. Since the first round starts on Friday afternoon, visitors should avoid tight same-day travel plans.

ℹ️ Other Information

The organizer plans live online coverage for selected boards. The first 12 boards of Open A, the first 6 boards of Open B, and the first 4 boards of Open C are planned for broadcast.

The FIDE rapid side event takes place on Wednesday, November 18. It uses 9 rounds with a 12 minutes + 3 seconds time control.

The FIDE blitz side event takes place on Thursday, November 19. It uses 12 rounds with a 5 minutes + 3 seconds time control.

6th International Chess Tournament Città di Amelia 2026 offers a full chess weekend in Umbria, with three FIDE-rated sections, side events, live-board coverage, and a strong local tournament atmosphere.
