2nd Kapadokya International Open Chess Tournament
2nd Kapadokya International Open Chess Tournament runs from August 17-23, 2026. This is a chess tournament in Ürgüp, Turkey, in 2026. It brings international summer chess to Cappadocia and strengthens the event partnership between Ürgüp Municipality and the Turkish Chess Federation.
The tournament uses a four-section structure based on rating bands, and every category runs over nine rounds. Categories A, B, and C count for both FIDE and national rating, while Category D counts for national rating only. As a result, the event serves titled players, experienced club competitors, improving juniors, and domestic newcomers at the same time.
Play takes place at the Ürgüp Turgut Özal Cultural Centre. In addition, the event offers a major published prize fund, two double-round days, and a clear on-site verification process before Round 1. Therefore, the tournament combines practical organization with one of the strongest prize structures on the regional summer calendar.

⏱️ Time Control & Pairings
All four sections use a 9-round Swiss system with a 90+30 classical time control. In Categories A, B, and C, the first three rounds use the Baku Accelerated System. Meanwhile, Category D also runs over nine Swiss rounds, although the published format does not add that accelerated note for the entry-level section.
Tie-breaks follow a clear order. First comes direct encounter. Then come Buchholz-1, Sonneborn-Berger, average opponents’ Buchholz, number of wins, and finally drawing of lots. In addition, Swiss Manager handles the pairings, and the default time is 30 minutes.
The structure is easy to understand. Categories A, B, and C are the FIDE-rated groups. By contrast, Category D is aimed at lower-rated and unrated Turkish players and counts for national rating only. Therefore, players can choose a section that matches both rating level and federation status.

👥 Sections / Groups
| Section | Eligibility | Rating use |
|---|---|---|
| Category A | Elo 2000+ or national rating 2000+ without Elo | FIDE and national |
| Category B | Elo 1700-1999 or national rating 1700-1999 without Elo | FIDE and national |
| Category C | Elo 1400-1699; national rating 1400-1699 without Elo; foreign players without Elo | FIDE and national |
| Category D | Turkish players with national rating 1399 or below, or without national rating | National only |
The section system is broad and player-friendly. Stronger players can enter Category A. Then experienced club players can compete in Category B. After that, Category C serves lower-rated international and domestic players. Finally, Category D gives local and unrated Turkish players a separate national-rated group.
Because of that structure, the tournament can host very different player profiles without making the format confusing.
