16th Chennai Open International Grandmasters Chess Tournament 2026
Celebrated as one of India’s strongest open tournaments, the 16th Chennai Open International Grandmasters Chess Tournament 2026, held from 2-9 January 2026 in Chennai, Tamil Nadu (India), brings together grandmasters, titled players, and ambitious competitors from around the world. Organized by the Tamil Nadu State Chess Association under the guidance of the All India Chess Federation, the event continues its tradition of excellence with a classic 10-round Swiss competition.
Hosted at Hotel Ramada Egmore—situated close to two major railway stations—the tournament combines world-class playing conditions, a generous prize fund of Rs. 20,00,000, and precise technical standards. Players will compete for top honors, category prizes, and the prestigious Dr. N. Mahalingam Trophy, making this one of the key events in the Asian chess calendar.

Players may win only one prize (whichever is higher).
⏱️ Time Control & Pairings
• 10-round Swiss system.
• 90 minutes per player + 30 seconds per move from move 1.
• 15-minute default time applies.
• Draws cannot be agreed before each player has made 30 moves.
• All electronic items and wrist watches are strictly banned from the hall.
• Computer pairings (Swiss system) under FIDE regulations.
• Appeals must be submitted in writing within one hour of game completion with a fee of Rs. 3000 (refundable if upheld).
