15. „Unser Fritz“ Open & Basic 2026 takes place from June 2-7, 2026 in Herne, Germany. This is a chess tournament in Herne, Germany, in 2026. The event combines two parallel over-the-board chess tournaments: the unrestricted Open and the rating-limited Basic section. Both sections use a seven-round classical chess tournament format with FIDE rules at Pfarrzentrum St. Barbara, and the tournament also connects with the 2026 individual championship of the Ruhr district chess federation. The published cash prize structure reaches about USD 2,900 before the additional Ruhrgebiet federation prizes.

Additionally, this chess tournament in Herne gives players a strong Corpus Christi weekend option in the Ruhr area with two clearly separated sections, practical evening rounds during the week, and accessible playing conditions. The 15. „Unser Fritz“ Open & Basic 2026 also offers rating prizes, special prizes, and separate Ruhrgebiet championship awards for eligible regional players. As a result, this chess event in Herne is an appealing choice for ambitious club players, juniors, seniors, women, and improving competitors who want a serious FIDE rated chess tournament in western Germany.

⏱️ Time Control & Pairings

Both sections use FIDE-based Swiss pairings. The Open follows the standard Swiss system under FIDE rules, while the Basic tournament uses an accelerated Swiss system under FIDE rules. Each player receives 90 minutes for the first 40 moves and then 30 additional minutes for the rest of the game, together with a 30-second increment from move one. Therefore, both events follow a full classical chess tournament structure across six playing days.

In addition, players may request one half-point bye in one of the first five rounds if they announce it in advance. The published tie-break order is Buchholz with one discarded result, then cumulative score, and finally drawing of lots. The waiting time is 30 minutes from the official start of the round.

Mobile phones and other electronic devices must be switched off and placed next to the board or stored in a separate bag. The arbiter may impose a sanction under the applicable FIDE rules if a player carries or uses such a device improperly.
