Welsh Chess Union

Welsh Chess Union is the national chess federation of Wales and one of the central organizing bodies for competitive chess in the country. It operates as the governing structure behind national championships, official ratings activity, federation administration, and Welsh representation in international chess. The union has a long-standing role in shaping the modern Welsh chess landscape and remains the main umbrella body for organized over-the-board competitive chess across Wales.

The federation’s public structure shows that it is responsible not only for governance, but also for a broad calendar of national championships, congresses, junior events, league administration, and international team activity. Its own constitutional wording defines its purpose as promoting, organizing, and regulating competitive chess throughout Wales. In practice, that includes senior and junior championship events, the Welsh rapid and blitz championships, domestic league activity, and organizational support for Welsh teams in major international competitions.

The union also maintains a visible leadership and officer framework. Bill Harle is listed as president, while Mark Adams serves as executive director and appears as a key operational contact in current official material. In addition, Kevin Staveley is repeatedly shown as a major organizer-facing contact for Welsh Chess Union events, especially in relation to home chess and tournament administration. This combination of governance, event delivery, and national representation makes the Welsh Chess Union one of the most important chess organizations in Wales.
