Sara Bangla Daba Sangstha is the apex body for chess in West Bengal, officially recognised by the All India Chess Federation as the state’s governing chess organization. Based in Kolkata, SBDS coordinates players, clubs, districts and academies under one umbrella, ensuring that tournaments and development programs across the state follow unified, player-friendly standards. Its mission is to spread chess to every corner of West Bengal, with a strong focus on transparency, fair play and professional organisation.
The association runs a packed calendar of events: state championships in classical, rapid and blitz formats, school and youth tournaments, district-level competitions and FIDE-rated opens that give local talents a platform to earn and improve their ratings. SBDS also invests heavily in training and education—conducting coaching camps, arbiter and trainer seminars, school outreach projects and innovative initiatives like “Ghar Ghar Me Chess”, which supports districts with equipment and resources so that more children can start playing.
On the national stage, Sara Bangla Daba Sangstha has quickly become a trusted partner for major AICF events, including prestigious championships such as the 51st National Women Chess Championship 2025 in Durgapur. Under the leadership of President GM Dibyendu Barua and a team of experienced officials, SBDS works closely with districts, sponsors and media partners to deliver high-quality events and to make chess a visible, aspirational sport for players and families throughout West Bengal.
