International Chess Federation (FIDE)

The International Chess Federation (FIDE) is the world governing body for over-the-board chess. It is headquartered in Lausanne, Switzerland, and it unites national chess federations worldwide. Founded in 1924, FIDE coordinates global standards for organized chess competition.

FIDE sets the Laws of Chess and key competition regulations for international events. In addition, it manages the FIDE rating system and publishes official rating lists across standard, rapid, and blitz. Moreover, it awards international titles for players and officials, including arbiters and trainers.

FIDE also leads the World Championship cycle, including the Candidates events and other qualification pathways. Furthermore, it supports integrity and fair-play initiatives and oversees major championships and global calendars. As a result, players and organizers can rely on consistent rules across FIDE-governed tournaments.
