Ballarat Chess Club

Ballarat Chess Club is one of the longest-running chess clubs in Australia, with a history of more than 150 years in the regional city of Ballarat, Victoria. The club meets at the historic Ballaarat Mechanics’ Institute in the city centre and offers a welcoming environment for players of all ages and playing strengths. Over time, it has become a focal point for local chess culture and a natural meeting place for enthusiasts from Ballarat and the surrounding areas.

The club is best known for organising the annual Begonia Open, one of Australia’s most respected weekend chess tournaments, as well as regular club championships, rapid events and coaching sessions. A dedicated junior programme, run through the Ballarat Junior Chess Club, introduces children to the game and provides structured training plus league games in a friendly setting. Through these activities, Ballarat Chess Club gives both beginners and experienced players frequent opportunities for rated and social play.

Alongside over-the-board meetings every Thursday evening, the club maintains an active online presence, including an online club on Chess.com and regular updates on social media. Coaching terms, junior activities and tournament news are communicated clearly via the website and Facebook page, so members and visitors always know what is happening next. This blend of tradition, strong events and modern communication keeps Ballarat Chess Club vibrant and accessible all year round.
