Armenian Chess Federation

The Armenian Chess Federation, established in 1927 and affiliated with FIDE since 1992, serves as the central authority for chess in Armenia. Headquartered at 34 Shevchenko Street, Yerevan, within the Tigran Petrosian Chess House, the federation is led by President Serzh Sargsyan. It oversees national chess activities, develops local talent, and represents Armenia in international competitions. Armenia boasts one of the highest numbers of grandmasters per capita, reflecting the country’s deep-rooted chess culture.

The federation organizes several key tournaments annually, including the Armenian Chess Championship, which has been held since 1934. It also hosts the Stepan Avagyan Memorial Tournament and the Tigran Petrosian Memorial, attracting international participants. Notably, Armenia hosted the 32nd Chess Olympiad in 1996 and the World Team Chess Championships in 2001 and 2015, underscoring its commitment to promoting chess globally.
